Dystopian Laboratory - The Dean 2025

Design a post-apocalyptic laboratory environment for a rapper’s music video, combining dystopian industrial elements with cinematic lighting and experimental technology. The project should create a dark, immersive atmosphere centered around a mysterious scientific experiment or unstable energy source, while remaining visually powerful and believable within the existing location.

Assignment

  • A series of atmospheric concept renders exploring a dystopian laboratory setting built around a large experimental science project. The environment combines raw industrial textures, worn materials, exposed structures, and dramatic lighting to create a tense and cinematic post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

The existing location was partially reconstructed in 3D to accurately integrate the concepts into the real space. Based on this foundation, multiple visual directions were developed, focusing on mood, lighting composition, practical effects, and key set elements that would strengthen the dystopian aesthetic on camera.

The laboratory features custom-built experimental components, improvised machinery, cables, lighting structures, and energy-related props, all designed to enhance the feeling of a decaying yet functional research facility. Cold industrial tones are contrasted with sharp artificial lighting and glowing accents, creating a visually striking and immersive backdrop for the videoclip.

In contrast, a custom-made modern cabinet with a steel frame introduces a clean, contemporary edge, all precisely tailored to fit the space. At the back, a large marble wall ties the entire design together, creating a cohesive and refined backdrop.

The overall atmosphere is warm and inviting, with subtle copper accents and a balanced combination of rustic wood and sleek marble, blending traditional charm with modern simplicity.

  • Multiple high-quality renders, refined throughout the process based on the client’s feedback, exploring different variations that communicate atmosphere through distinct visual interpretations of the design.

Multiple high-quality inspiration renders and mood studies were created throughout the process, exploring different approaches to the dystopian atmosphere and visual storytelling of the laboratory environment.

In addition, the project extended beyond visualization into on-site creative direction and set construction. The final decor was built and refined on location, including the addition of extra practical elements and custom-made details inspired directly by the original renders and overall post-apocalyptic concept.
